Reprofiling

Home / Glossary / Reprofiling

Definition

Reprofiling is the process of rebuilding the original shape, profile, or dimensions of a damaged concrete surface after deterioration, breakout, or localised repair works.

Explanation

This method is commonly used after spalling, delamination, reinforcement corrosion, or mechanical damage has caused section loss or irregular surfaces. Once defective concrete has been removed and reinforcement treated where necessary, repair mortars or concrete systems are applied to restore the element to its intended geometry.

Reprofiling may be required for beams, columns, slabs, balconies, soffits, edges, and façade elements where both structural protection and visual consistency are important. It is often carried out using hand-applied repair mortars, spray-applied concrete, or specialist repair systems depending on the repair size and access conditions.

Correct material selection is important to ensure compatibility with the parent concrete in terms of strength, shrinkage, thermal movement, and durability.

Why It Matters

Reprofiling restores protective cover to reinforcement and ensures the repaired area performs correctly both structurally and visually. Poor reprofiling can lead to weak repairs, water ingress, and recurring deterioration.
