Overlay Systems

Home / Glossary / Overlay Systems

Definition

Overlay systems are repair and protection layers applied over existing concrete surfaces to restore profile, improve durability, and provide resistance against wear, moisture ingress, chemicals, or environmental attack.

Explanation

These systems are commonly used on floors, car parks, bridge decks, balconies, ramps, podium slabs, and industrial surfaces where the existing concrete remains structurally sound but requires surface restoration or added protection.

Overlays may consist of cementitious screeds, polymer-modified mortars, resin-based systems, waterproof coatings, or protective wearing surfaces depending on the exposure conditions and performance requirements. Some overlays are bonded directly to the substrate, while others are designed as unbonded systems.

Successful installation depends on correct surface preparation, including removal of weak material, contamination, laitance, and moisture-related defects. Thickness, compatibility, and movement behaviour must also be carefully considered to avoid cracking or debonding.

Why It Matters

Overlay systems extend service life by protecting concrete before deeper structural deterioration develops. They reduce maintenance costs and provide an efficient alternative to full concrete replacement where structural integrity remains intact.
