Home / Glossary / Gunite

Definition

Gunite is a dry-mix form of spray-applied concrete where cement and aggregate are conveyed dry through a hose, with water added only at the nozzle immediately before application.

Explanation

Unlike wet-mix shotcrete, gunite allows the nozzle operator to control the water content during placement. This can provide flexibility for certain repair applications, particularly where varying surface conditions exist or where smaller-scale repair works are required.

Gunite is often used for concrete repairs in tunnels, retaining walls, swimming pools, marine structures, and difficult-access areas. It can also be applied for patch repairs, section rebuilding, and structural strengthening where conventional placement methods are less practical.

As with all spray-applied systems, correct substrate preparation is essential. Loose concrete must be removed, reinforcement treated where necessary, and the receiving surface properly prepared to ensure strong adhesion and durability.

Why It Matters

Gunite offers a practical repair method for complex concrete reinstatement where access, geometry, or repair scale make traditional placement inefficient. Proper application improves durability and extends structural service life.
