Screeding

Home / Glossary / Screeding

Definition

Screeding is the process of applying and levelling a thin layer of material over a concrete substrate to create a smooth, level, and durable surface for protection, repair, or final floor finishes.

Explanation

In concrete repair, screeding is often used to correct uneven surfaces, restore falls for drainage, improve wear resistance, or prepare a substrate for waterproofing membranes, coatings, or floor finishes. Screeds may be cementitious, polymer-modified, fast-drying, or resin-based depending on the application.

It is commonly used in basements, balconies, podium decks, industrial floors, car parks, and roof slabs where surface performance is critical. In some cases, screeding also forms part of an overlay system providing additional protection against abrasion or moisture ingress.

Proper substrate preparation is essential, including cleaning, priming where required, and ensuring suitable bond conditions. Thickness and curing must be controlled to prevent cracking, curling, or debonding.

Why It Matters

Screeding improves both performance and durability by creating a reliable working surface for protective systems and finishes. Poor screeding can compromise waterproofing, drainage, and the long-term success of the repair.
