Hand-Applied Mortar Repair

Home / Glossary / Hand-Applied Mortar Repair

Definition

Hand-applied mortar repair is a concrete remediation method where repair mortar is manually placed and compacted into prepared areas of damaged or deteriorated concrete. It is commonly used for localised repairs where precision and controlled placement are required.

Explanation

This method is typically used after defective concrete has been removed through breakout works and exposed reinforcement has been cleaned and treated. A compatible repair mortar, often polymer-modified or cementitious, is then applied by hand to rebuild the original profile and restore cover to reinforcement.

Hand-applied mortar repair is suitable for columns, beams, soffits, balconies, slabs, and edges where defects are limited in size or where spray-applied systems are not practical. It allows careful placement around reinforcement and detailed finishing for visible surfaces.

Material selection must consider bond strength, shrinkage control, durability, and compatibility with the parent concrete. Proper surface preparation is critical to ensure long-term adhesion and performance.

Why It Matters

Hand-applied mortar repair provides accurate and durable reinstatement for localised concrete defects. When correctly specified, it restores protection to reinforcement, improves durability, and prevents further structural deterioration.
